Study: Pets are good for your mental health
FARGO, N.D. — Here's something animal lovers have likely known to be true, but science is now backing it up: pets are good for your mental health.
That's according to an article published by the journal BMC Psychiatry last month.
The article takes a look at 17 different studies and found that there are positive benefits of having pets for people with mental health problems.
Here in Fargo, shelters like Homeward Animal Shelter say everybody can benefit from having an animal in their lives.
"They provide you with a sense of purpose," says Heather Klefstad. "You have to take care of them, feed them, walk them It provides you with a sense of purpose and routine outside of yourself."
According to a 2015 Harris Poll, 95% of pet owners think of their animal as a part of the family.
