Thieves target boat owners in Becker County
DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — Thieves in lakes country are targeting boat owners, but the Becker County Sheriff's Office said most of the crimes are preventable.
Four boats, three motors and one trailer have been stolen throughout the county since Aug. 1, said Sheriff Todd Glander.
"We don't see a lot of boats reported stolen, but it does happen," Glander said.
Three of the boats have since been found, including one pontoon that was taken from J&K Marina.
The sheriff said the keys to the boat were left inside and became an easy target.
Investigators are still working to determine exactly how the theft was carried out, but they believe the thief drove down the river to Muskrat Lake.
The owner took to social media to find her boat using Facebook to spread the word.
Eventually, the pontoon was found with minor damage and some missing things.
Glander said it takes an entire community to return these boats to the rightful owner and prevent crimes before they even happen.
"There are a lot of times when people just notice something," Glander said. "That's what we ask. If you see something, report it."
The Sheriff's Office hasn't charged anyone in any of the thefts, but they are still investigating.
