Learning Lacrosse: Moorhead will add lacrosse as varsity sport in 2019
MOORHEAD - Five years of waiting and working finally paid off for the Moorhead Lacrosse Booster Club Monday night.
The Moorhead School Board unanimously approved the addition of boys and girls varsity and JV lacrosse to the high school for the spring of 2019.
Moorhead will become the 86th school to offer the sport in Minnesota.
A small group of the booster club was on hand at the meeting, including two players, Tate Gilbertson and Tom Alderson who were both visibly emotional after the school board said they'll be playing varsity lacrosse at Jim Gotta Field next April.
Athletic Director Dean Haugo says "there will be a learning curve for him" to pick up the nuances of the sport. Haugo says his first objective is to fill out a schedule.
85 boys teams and 83 girls teams play varsity lacrosse in the state of Minnesota.
The sport is contested in the spring in Minnesota.
